Michael Klein, CEO of the Santa Barbara-based hedge fund Pacificor LLC, his teenage daughter, Talia Klein, and Panamanian pilot Edwin Lasso were killed after their plane crashed On December 23 in the jungle-covered mountains of Chiriqui province in western Panama.
On the day, the plane took off from Islas Secas off the Pacific coast of Panama where they were on vacation at an eco-resort that Michael Klein owns, but went missing in the mountainous area of Panama's western Chiriqui province. They should have been heading for Chiriqui volcano about 620 kilometers (385 miles) west of Panama City.
Francesca Lewis, the 12-year-old friend of Klein's 13-year-old daughter, was the solo survivor of the accident and is now treated a local hospital with hypothermia and multiple traumas.
Michael Klein, 37, was best known for selling his e-Groups e-mail communication service to Yahoo. In the 1990’s, he was president and CEO of e-Groups, the worlds largest e-mail communication service. He sold the business to Yahoo, Inc. for $450 million in August 2000. The company is now known as Yahoo Groups.
