Maria Lauterbach, 20, is with the 2nd Marine Logistics Group in North Carolina. She was reported missing by her mother, Mary, on December 19, 2007. She said that her daughter is stationed at Camp Lejeune and she was very suspicious that something bad may have happened to her daughter. Maria's mother said that Maria was a witness in an incident that had occurred on the base and Maria was supposed to testify in the proceedings.
Anyone who comes in contact with the victim or locates her vehicle, a blue, four-door 2006 Hyundai Sonata with the N.C. registration WZN-4597, is asked to contact the Onslow County Sheriff's Department at 910-455-3113. People with information also can contact Crime Stoppers at 910-938-3273.
Update January 11: The sheriff investigating the disappearance of Maria Lauterbach says he expects a "major announcement" today, after detectives interview her roommate Marine Sergeant Daniel Durham.
Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown says he thinks Marine Sergeant Daniel Durham can shed light on the case of the missing woman. Durham is not a suspect. But authorities think Durham was the last person to talk with the woman, who is due to give birth in mid-February. Durham's been training in California.
Update January 11 Kwtx.com: Sadly, Missing Pregnant Marine Maria Lauterbach was dead, she was possibly murdered by the fellow marine who was accused of having sexually attacked her.
Authorities in North Carolina said late Friday morning pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead.
A sheriff in Jacksonville, N.C. says detectives learned Friday that the Marine is dead, and that she was buried somewhere in coastal Onslow County.
They identified the suspect in the case as another Marine whom she accused of sexually assaulting her, but said the man is not in custody and authorities don't know where he is.
