Willie Horton was a convicted first-degree murder and had been sentenced to life in prison. But while as a subject of then Governer Dukakis' Massachusetts weekend furlough program since June 1986, he twice raped a woman in Oxon Hill, Maryland, stabbed and pistol-whipped her fiancé in April, 1987. After being caught in the state, Horton was sentenced to two consecutive life terms plus 85 years by Judge Vinent Fermia.
